Facts About Kennewick’s Fleas

Fleas are more than just a nuisance; they are biological marvels of survival, which makes them particularly challenging to eliminate. Understanding their unique abilities helps explain why they can be difficult to manage without a comprehensive pest control strategy.

Here are several key facts about them:

Incredible jumpers. A flea can leap vertically up to seven inches and horizontally up to thirteen inches. This impressive athletic ability allows them to transfer easily from the ground to a passing host.
Complex life cycle. Fleas have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Only adult fleas live on pets, while the other stages develop unseen in the surrounding environment, like your carpet and furniture.
Voracious eaters. A female flea’s reproduction is fueled by her massive appetite; she can consume up to 15 times her body weight in blood daily, a necessary step for laying eggs.
Rapid reproduction. Under the right conditions, a single female flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, allowing a small number of fleas to become a massive population quickly.

Common Household Fleas

The cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) is, by far, the most common culprit. Ironically, it's the species found most often on cats and dogs in North America. The dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) is a separate species seen much less frequently.

Distinguishing between them is impossible for the naked eye and requires a microscope to see subtle differences in their anatomy.

Still, you can tell them apart by observing the following:

Head shape. The cat flea has a longer, more sloped head, while the dog flea's head is shorter and more rounded.
Genal comb. This is a row of dark spines on the flea's "cheek." On a cat flea, the first spine of this comb is about half as long as the second. The first and second spines are nearly the same length on a dog flea.

Why Identification Should Not Be Your Main Concern

Identifying the exact species is a task for entomologists and isn't necessary for homeowners. All common household fleas present the same problems: they feed on blood, reproduce at an alarming rate, and hide their eggs and pupae in your home's carpets and furniture.

Because of these shared habits, the approach to handling an infestation remains consistent regardless of the specific type involved.

Are Fleas Dangerous?

Fleas are more than just an itchy annoyance; they can introduce several health risks for your family and pets. It's essential to address them promptly to prevent discomfort and the potential for more serious issues.

The most common problems include:

Flea allergy dermatitis. Many animals are allergic to flea saliva, which can cause intense itching, skin infections, and hair loss.
Tapeworms. Pets can get tapeworms by swallowing infected fleas while grooming.
Discomfort and infection. For people, flea bites cause itchy welts. Scratching these bites can lead to secondary skin infections.
