3 Tips for Preventing a Bed Bug Infestation in Your Home

Declutter Your Home

Bed bugs, like many other pests, like to make their homes or hide in quiet, dark places that generally go undisturbed and have an ample source of food. This can make the cluttered areas of your home a veritable paradise for these pests, especially in terms of hiding places. The more cluttered your home, the harder it will be to both prevent and get rid of an infestation. Cardboard boxes make especially good hiding places, so make sure you empty and replace them with plastic alternatives sooner rather than later.

Watch Out for Second-Hand Furniture

Sure, second-hand furniture may be a huge bargain when it comes to the cost, but you might want to think again before bringing it home. You don’t have a way to know ahead of time if that furniture is infested with bed bugs. By bringing in that furniture, you could be bringing bed bugs into your home where you’ll now have to deal with them. If you do decide to purchase and bring home second-hand furniture, be sure to thoroughly inspect it before bringing it inside. Consider treating it with a product that can kill any bed bugs beforehand as well.

Traveling? “DREAM” On

Traveling is one of the most common ways people end up picking up and bringing home bed bugs. The good news is that there are things you can do to reduce your risk of bringing home these unwelcome hitchhikers as you travel. Simply remember to DREAM.
  • Determine - determine if there are signs of an infestation where you’re staying.
  • Raise - raise furniture to look for bed bugs.
  • Examine - examine your luggage for bed bugs on a luggage rack and away from the bed and wall.
  • Assess - assess your luggage again as you repack it and return home, avoiding placing it on the bed.
  • Move - move all your clothing from your luggage to the dryer within 15 minutes of arriving home and run it on the highest setting to kill any bed bugs you may have brought home with you.
Preventing a bed bug infestation from taking hold in your home is a far better option than dealing with having one exterminated. Decluttering your home, avoiding second-hand furniture and remembering to DREAM while traveling are some of the things that can help you avoid a bed bug infestation. Keep an eye out for signs of an infestation as well so you can catch it as soon as possible.
