3 Occasional Invaders and What to Do about Them

kphelps • Jun 01, 2022

No matter where you live, odds are that there’s at least one or two pests that you feel like you find yourself battling with on a fairly regular basis. For each one of those, however, there are handfuls of other pests that you don’t see around your house as often. These are sometimes referred to as occasional invaders, pests that are more of a nuisance than a danger and who may invade from time to time, sometimes in problematically large numbers.

Earwigs

Earwigs sure look icky, even intimidating thanks to those pincers they have on their rear ends, but they aren’t considered dangerous. Their pincers can be used as a defensive or offensive weapon, as well as a part of their mating ritual. You’re most likely to find earwigs in your laundry room or bathrooms because they like warm, damp areas. That is, if you find them. Their nocturnal nature means that they’re likely to be hiding in cracks and crevices for safety during the day.

Crickets

The sound of crickets can be charming at dusk. At least, when they’re outside anyway. If you’re hearing crickets in your house, you probably won’t be finding that sound charming for a while. Like earwigs, they like warm, moist environments, so you can expect to find them around kitchens, fireplaces, and heaters. Aside from the noise, crickets can be a problem because of their tendency to damage fabrics and stain both your clothes and furniture with their droppings.

Millipedes

Millipedes sure look creepy with all those legs, but like the other occasional invaders listed here, they’re considered harmless. In fact, their tendency is simply to curl up when they feel threatened. They’re also similar in that they like places with plenty of moisture, so you may find them in laundry rooms, bathrooms, or basements as well.

Just because occasional invaders aren’t considered dangerous doesn’t mean that they aren’t capable of being a significant nuisance. Take a good look around your home and make sure that any cracks, holes, and potential entry points are sealed up. Be sure to check your windows, screens, and doors. Because many of them like humidity, take steps to control the humidity levels in your home, especially in areas like bathrooms, laundry rooms, and your basement. If you do find occasional invaders in your home, vacuum them up and then empty your vacuum into a garbage bag that you can seal and remove from your home.
